We seem to have emerged from the last few months relatively unscathed. Dad in hospital, floods, no water, busy at work etc etc... Well we're on holiday now, we have water and Dad's out of hospital - hurrah!

So I thought I would finish the transfer of the old New World stuff and the really old New World. I've now finished the transfer - at last, thank goodness for rainy Sunday afternoons! It's taken ages, but we have all the New World stuff in Sonar format, which is good. I have transferred stuff back to the time of 'Jasmie' etc. I haven't got the stuff before that, but I regard that as mainly unlistenable (with one or two exceptions), but we also have mix downs of that stuff on CD now. So its good not to be reliant on tapes for a backup of this stuff. Phew! I will send a copy of all the raw WAV files on DVD for you to experiment with also.

We're probably going to have a go at some mix downs over the next few weeks. So watch this space...

We've had a stab at remixing One Day. The changes so far include:

1. Vocals were 'V-vocalled', VC-64 (usual preset) and EQ (usual settings). Also resorted to usual reverb and delay settings, with a touch of chorus on backing vocals.
2. Acoustic Guitar - Left mic panned hard left and right mic panned hard right. Then the clever bit. The right mic was nudged very slightly to delay it. This produces a really nice duo-guitar type effect. I also applied a high pass filter to take out somme of the bottom end boominess. A touch of reverb added for sparkle.
3. Bass - Guitar Rig and VC-64
4. Drums - VC-64 and a touch of reverb. I also notched a bit towards the top end to remove the hardness/tinny edge
5. Pad - high pass filter
6. Strings - added top end EQ to add a bit of air
7. Electric piano - not happy this is cutting quite right yet. I might fiddle a bit more before I post the mix to Box.
8. Mad guitar - nothing to do to this, except made it a bit more prominent - this is a genius guitar part. It still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
9. A bit of VC-64 on overall mix.

Just a few more tweaks to get the keyboards to sit right and I will post to Box, maybe later today.

Again, comments most welcome.

It is a long song and it has taken perseverance to get this far. The main changes are:

1. V-vocal corrections on all vocals. We have now really got used to this tool and used much more extensively and used the vibrato tool as well to add some subtle vibrato to Gav's vocals.
2. Eq the vocals by using highpass filter around 150K, attenuated at around 2K and boosted at around 6K. This seemed to work really well using the Sonitus:FX in Sonar, so I have saved it as a preset to speed things up in the future.
3. Added VC-64 'Male hard bitng vocal' preset and then reverb and delay. A touch of chorus was added to backing vocals and only to lead vocals in the M8. I am really pleased with the way the vocals have turned out.
4. Guitar rig and VC-64 on bass
5. Drums - VC-64 and a touch of reverb - I think I may have them a bit quiet in the mix.
6. I have applied high filter EQ to some of the guitar and added Guitar Rig to the 2nd guitar to make it stand out a bit. Guitar maybe a bit quiet.
7. A bit of reverb and delay on the organ in the M8. I have used PerfectSpace reverb throughout for all reverb settings on other tracks.
8. Piano - VC-64 to help it sit better in the mix, just adds a little bite to it.
9. Corrected timing in consistencies in the stabs using the Audio-snap tool in Sonar. Now sounds much tighter in these sections. Also the addition of reverb on piano and drums live these sections more life.
10. High pass eq filter on lead guitar in Chorus to take out clunky bit that was interferring with stuff in the mid range.

I thinks that's it for the time being. We now need to get relative levels right because we're not quite there yet. Comments welcome. PS I also want to add some extra stuff/replace instruments in the M8 section, but one step at a time!

I am streaming the old New World recordings, recorded on ADAT on a Tascam DA-38, into Sonar 6. The process is fairly labourious as I stream two tracks at a time, then line them up within Sonar. Absolute seemed a good contender to start with, as it is the song where we (well at least me!) were most unhappy with the mix. The drums were weedy and too loud and the instruments seemed to have no presence. Anyway, this is what Teresa and I have done to Absolute:

1. Used V-Vocal to correct pitch in accuracies on the vocal part - V-vcoal is a stunning piece of software.
2. Rolled off the bottom end of the vocals, so remove the 'honk'.
3. Reverb and delay plus VC-64 using 'hard vocals preset', plus a touch of chorus on lead vocals
3. Same again for the backing vocals except much more chorus to fill them out
4. Drums - used the VC-64 (amazing piece of software)plus rolled off a little of the top end to remove harshness
5. Same again for Bass, plus put it through the NI Guitar Rig
6. Used VC-64 acoustic guitar preset on acoustic guitar to brighten the sound and give it more presence
7. Rolled off the bottom end of the pad as it was interfering with the other instruments
8. Used VC-64 master mix preset on entire mix
9. Added a touch of reverb on the entire mix to add a bit of sparkle
10. We didn't fade out at the end

We sent rough mp3 mix to Gav for comments.

That is the question? Well it's Cakewalk Sonar 6 Producer edition that's won out in the end. There's not much to choose between the two to be honest, but it was the dongle (or lack of) that swayed it and the great deal I got from Dolphin music. So we're both used to using Cubase and it's one week to go before we record and I've got Sonar installed! We must be mad... However, I have spent the last few weeks going through the Sonar Tutorials etc and getting used to it. In fact I think I prefer it now to Cubase. But I guess you would say that about something you've just bought!

So we're installed and ready to go. The laptop has 2Gb of RAM, Native Instruments Komplete 4, Sonar 6, Kore and a wireless keyboard with Sonar 6 stickers on it for ease of use! What more could we want. I said to Teresa if we can't sound good with all this stuff then we really are rubbish! But we have high hopes. So what's left on the techy side - mikes, guitars and sound treatment of the room. More on this soon.

The music and this blog is authored by Gav and Rich and we wanted to create this blog to leave a trail of the creative process that has gone into the making of the music. We used to be called New World (rather embarassingly) and our music (and lyrics) were very different to Deadwing. Deadwing marked a change in approach to both the music writing and recording and more of an edge to the lyric writing. A more sceptical edge rather than a naive slant which was the style of New World. I will post some recent e-mail exhanges on this blog.

We use e-mails to exchange thoughts which we hope gives Gav some creative kickstart to write some lyrics, ready for when we get together and record in March...
